Implant dentistry

Millions of dental implants are placed by dentists worldwide every year. In recent years, this solution is becoming more and more popular among patients at our clinics. Dental implants are the most effective option for replacing missing teeth and for bringing back a happy and healthy smile that greatly improves patients’ quality of life.
Losing even a single tooth impairs the chewing ability and always requires replacement. A gap left by a missing tooth can cause adjacent teeth displacement – they either lean or move into the free space, as well as overeruption of the antagonistic tooth, due to the lack of opposing force that will also cause interferences in the occlusion and biting function. This happens, because the tooth must keep in contact with neighbouring teeth to remain stable.

Implantation is a widely appreciated and very common treatment option for missing teeth and rehabilitation of the masticatory system. No other treatment method than modern Implant Prosthodontics achieves, in such a comfortable way for the patient, almost lifelong  results that are so close to natural teeth esthetics and function.

A dental implant is a small screw made of titanium that is placed by a dental surgeon in the jawbone where it fuses with natural bone to serve as a support (like a natural tooth root) for a custom made tooth crown. It can also be used for an implant-supported prosthetic bridge or a denture replacing multiple teeth.
When our patients ask doctors about the most optimal methods of replacing missing teeth, dental implants are the method of choice in Dentalux clinics. This is because they allow patients to enjoy every day activities of life, without having to think about their teeth. Currently, dental implants are commonly used for replacing single or multiple missing teeth, but can be also applied to patients who have lost all of their teeth. They have now been successfully used in dentistry for more than four decades.

Modern dental implantology was invented by professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who in 1965 placed the first titanium dental implants into a human bone, and after several months added a fixed bridge onto it. What’s interesting about this first implant-based solution is that it was used by the patient for 40 years! Professor Brånemark was not a dentist, but a doctor of medicine, who studied blood microcirculation in the bone tissue and wound healing process before he discovered osseointegration (integration of titanium into living bone tissues) and started a new chapter in modern medicine.
