Diseases of mucous membranes and the periodontium Periodontal diseases (called periodontosis) are the second reason for tooth loss. They cause damage to the system by which a tooth is fixed to the bone, potentially resulting in the loss of may sometimes still be healthy teeth. Advanced periodontal diseases are difficult to treat, so prophylaxis and treatment of the early stages of periodontosis are of great importance. One of the significant reasons for this disease is insufficient oral hygiene. Unremoved dental plaque becomes thicker and thicker, in several days changing into hard dental calculus (tartar) that is impossible to remove with a toothbrush. STAGES OF DENTAL CALCULUS DEPOSIT Toxins produced by bacteria of the dental plaque start attacking gums. If the disease is not stopped quickly, the so-called physiological gingival pouch becomes deeper, creating a pathological periodontal pocket, and allowing for the onset of damage to the periodontium and bone. The first symptom of gingivitis (gum inflammation) is bleeding, occurring particularly during tooth-brushing. The progress in this condition leads to denudation of teeth roots, and, in the final stage, to loosening and loss of teeth. Treatment involves the application of anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agents in the form of ointments, gels and mouthwashes. Scaling, the procedure by which dental calculus is removed, is necessary. Deep periodontosis requires surgical procedures, of which the simplest is curettage - a scraping of the walls of the periodontal pockets to make them shallower. In more advanced cases, the so-called flap surgery is applied with the aim of promoting tissue restoration using pharmacological agents.
